Sonokeling is the commercial name used in Indonesia for the species Dalbergia latifolia, the same botanical species internationally known as East Indian Rosewood. Although it shares the same botanical identity, in this case its origin is Indonesia.
In profile format, this piece is intended for the manufacture of bindings and other perimeter details in string instruments. With an approximate density of 820 kg/m³, it offers good dimensional stability and wear resistance — important qualities in small-format components that must retain precision after machining.
Selection and Workshop Use
Profile pieces are selected for structural stability, absence of critical defects, and suitable grain orientation for subsequent cutting into binding strips.
Aesthetically, Sonokeling displays a wide chromatic range from warm browns to pinkish and violet tones, often with darker streaks that add visual depth and contrast. This natural variation allows elegant combinations with rosewood backs and sides, creating visual continuity in the instrument.
