BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD, THE MOST DESIRED WOOD

In this article we want to tell you more details about this unique wood, because if we talk about woods for instruments, Brazilian Rosewood has an almost mythical status in the world of guitar making. Frequently used during the first half of the 20th century in the best acoustic instruments, its fame is more than deserved: in addition to its superb tonal characteristics, it has a stunning look, with different dark-colored veins that form suggestive patterns, a high gloss once sanded, and is easy to work with. Its value as a tonewood is evidenced by the fact that it has been chosen by legendary builders such as Torres, Esteso, Smallman, and major brands such as Martin and Gibson.

FROM ACROSS THE OCEAN

Dalbergia Nigra is a wood originating from the Atlantic forest of Brazil. This is a tropical coastal area, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and is home to numerous species of wood that are highly sought after in the world of luthiery. Its place of origin also makes it known as Bahia Rosewood, after the Brazilian state located in the same region.

Brazilian Rosewood is a very hard and heavy wood, with a color ranging from deep red to various shades of brown, almost verging on black at times. Some pieces have black colored streaks called spider webs or landscapes, not unlike those of its relative Madagascar Rosewood. Another distinctive feature is its extraordinary resonance, the quality that makes it so prized by luthiers and guitar makers. If tapped, an evenly cut piece emits a clear, shimmering crystalline tone that lingers for seconds. This property, combined with its beauty, has made Brazilian Rosewood a favorite of musical instrument makers for centuries.

WORKING ON ITS PRESERVATION

Brazilian Rosewood is one of the most protected woods under the CITES agreement. This certification implies extreme care in all legal procedures for its commercialization. Only companies, such as Maderas Barber, which has a stock acquired in the 80's, dried naturally, and which scrupulously respect the legal origin of the wood, can obtain the necessary permits for its sale.

THE DAY HAS COME

Today we are launching several Brazilian Rosewood pieces in different formats: the most desired are the Unique Pieces, sets of backs and sides for both classical and acoustic guitars. You can see individual photos of each of these sets on our website, so you will always have the option to choose exactly the set you want, with one of its sides calibrated for convenience. We also have acoustic and classical headstocks and bridges, and fretboards in the three most common lengths: Classical, Acoustic and Electric.

Finally, we inform you that we also have 0.5 mm thick Brazilian Rosewood veneer to make classical and acoustic plywood sets. Due to the large number of possible combinations that we can customize for each client, veneer products are only available upon request.
