Titebond: The Wood Glue par excellence

For decades, Titebond has been leading the woodworking glue market by a wide margin, being an undisputed choice for luthiers and artisans worldwide. But what is the true reason behind this trend?

The first answer inevitably refers to the quality of its flagship product. Titebond Original has been the most widely used wood glue for 70 years.

Another aspect to highlight is the variety and specificity of its products. In our catalog, you can find Titebond Original, Premium, Ultimate, Cold Press, Genuine, Dark, and Instant Bond.

In this article, we will analyze the properties of each of these Titebond glue presentations and the different formats in which they are available.

Titebond Original, premium y ultimate:

We could think of this line as a product development with variations in bonding strength, drying time, temperature resistance, and water resistance. This can be clearly observed in the following comparative table:

Vega-Trem Vt1, Tremolo Vegatrem

This is a cost-effective and high-quality alternative to contact cement for large-scale bonding of veneers. It is specifically formulated for cold pressing veneers, solid woods, plywood, MDF, and other porous materials.

It is the first liquid form hide glue offered. It doesn't need to be mixed, heated, or stirred. Professional luthiers use Titebond Genuine Hide Glue for its long assembly time and exceptional strength.

Titebond Genuine Hide Glue provides excellent sandability and is not affected by finishes. Its moisture sensitivity allows for easy disassembly, a fundamental advantage in antique restoration or musical instrument repair.

Vega-Trem VT2 Vega-Trem

This is a tinted version of Titebond II Premium. Along with the same adhesive properties, it dries in a dark brown color that blends well with wood tones like Indian Rosewood. It is widely used in luthiery to enhance the finish of inlays and decorative pieces. When the design allows it, Titebond Dark is a great ally for rosette bonding.

This is Titebond's line of cyanoacrylate-based adhesives. With a bonding time of around 10 seconds and complete drying in less than a minute, this type of glue is ideal for repairing cracks or bonding in hard-to-reach places. Instant Bond is designed for wood bonding, although it can be used on different materials. The line offers different viscosity levels (gel, medium, thin, thick).

These products are not adhesives, but they are two essential allies when it comes to organizing gluing tasks in your workshop.

Titebrush is a durable glue brush with 100% silicone bristles and a plastic handle. It is ideal for use with most woodworking and polyurethane glues, eliminating the need for disposable brushes, fingers, and other tools for spreading glue. When you finish, let the glue dry and simply clean the bristles by friction.

It also includes a palette, which is the tool to use for more detailed work such as mortises and tenons, dovetail joints, or moldings.

On the other hand, if you are a high-volume user, you may be interested in having the Glue Pump to be able to buy the products in larger sizes (1 or 5 gallons) and then dispense these quantities into more convenient containers for handling.

FAQ´s about Titebond products

Do Titebond wood glues come out of clothing?

If Titebond wood glue is accidentally spilled on clothing, it is important to immediately wet it with water and keep it moist until all the adhesive is removed from the fabric. Do not put the garment in the dryer, as heat will melt the adhesive into the fabric and become permanent. Titebond II and Titebond III do not come off fabric if allowed to dry. A mixture of acetone/water/vinegar will soften the adhesive without dissolving it. This will allow it to be gently scraped off.

What is the assembly and curing speed of the Instant Bond line?

Instant Bond - Thin Assembly Time: 5 seconds Curing Speed: 3 seconds;

Instant Bond - Medium Assembly Time: 7 seconds Curing Speed: 5 seconds;

Instant Bond - Thick Assembly Time: 10 seconds Curing Speed: 8 seconds;

Instant Bond - Gel Assembly Time: 30 seconds Curing Speed: 20 seconds.

When Instant Bond Activator is used with Instant Bond adhesive, all assembly and curing times can be reduced by half.

Are Titebond glues safe?

All Titebond wood glues are safe to use and do not produce harmful fumes. They meet the requirements of ASTM D4236 for safe use in crafts. Both Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue and Titebond II Premium Wood Glue have been approved for indirect food contact. For this reason, it is the recommended glue for making cutting boards.

What are the resulting colors when Titebond wood glues dry?

Titebond III Ultimate - light brown

Titebond Original - yellow

Titebond II Premium - translucent yellow

Titebond Dark - brown

Titebond Liquid Hide - transparent amber

Titebond Melamine - colorless

Titebond Quick & Thick - colorless

Titebond Translucent - colorless

Titebond Instant Bond - colorless

What is the best way to disassemble a glued joint?

The key to disassembling glued joints is to weaken the bond. For Titebond Original, Titebond II, and Titebond III, try raising the temperature of the glue joint using a heat gun or hairdryer. This will reduce the strength of the adhesive.

In the case of Titebond Liquid Hide Glue, it can be released by adding a few drops of water along the joint edge.

How to properly add dye to Titebond wood glues?

It is possible to change the color of any water-based Titebond glue by adding water-soluble dyes or pigments. Water-soluble dyes, such as food coloring, can be added directly to the wood glues with thorough mixing. Do not add more than 5% dye to avoid affecting the adhesive strength. Start by adding a small amount, as small amounts can significantly alter the color. Before making the final decision on the color, make sure to let a sample of the dyed glue dry. When mixes dry, they may appear different from their wet state.
