Le manche est l'une des pièces les plus importantes de l'instrument. Toute la tension causée par les cordes et par le guitariste repose dessus. Le manche de la basse électrique, comme celui de la guitare électrique, est affecté par la tension. C'est pourquoi la grande majorité des fabricants utilisent des tiges de renfort à l'intérieur du manche pour gagner en force et en même temps maintenir le manche ferme et aligné. Le manche de la basse électrique est légèrement plus long que le manche de la guitare électrique, mais les variations sont infinies et dépendent du fabricant et de la personnalisation qu'il souhaite apporter à l'instrument.
Les deux systèmes de fabrication du manche les plus populaires sont le vissage ou le collage au corps et le système de manche traversant ; le manche traverse le corps et est collé dans le corps lui-même.
