Viola tops are usually made of European Spruce, the top is the most important part of the viola. The strings make the top vibrate and it is these vibrations, more than anything else, that determine the sound of the instrument, so a good choice of wood will allow us to achieve good acoustics.
It is very important the thickness of the top in the construction of the instrument, usually the thicker tops don’t provide a thin and bright sound, for this reason the luthiers are very methodical and measure up to a tenth of millimeter to give the viola exactly the sound they are looking for.
