Quality grading of our woods

  • Wood Description: Heartwood is a pale pink or light reddish brown. Sapwood is slightly paler but is not usually distinct from heartwood. Pear wood is sometimes steamed to deepen the pink coloration. Pear is also occasionally black and used as a substitute for ebony.
  • Recommendations: Overall easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Turns, glues, and finishes well.
  • Drying: Average linear shrinkage from green to air-dry is 4.5% across the grain.
  • Uses: Hard Pear is durable and is used for furniture and musical instruments, and to a limited extent for boat building and carpentry.
