Malaysian Blackwood is the new guitar tonewood we have added to our catalog. This tonewood seeks to position itself as a product of distinction for guitar builders. This is due to its look and sound.

At Maderas Barber we help enterprising luthiers to develop their personal brand by offering exotic woods of excellent quality at a competitive price. And that is why we have incorporated this batch of Malaysian blackwood.

Characteristics of Malaysian Blackwood

Its botanical name is Diospyros ebonasea and, unlike African Blackwood, Malaysian Blackwood is not a Dalbergia, it is a somewhat particular ebony native to Malaysia with tonal characteristics similar to Dalbergias but with an additional benefit in clear mids and trebles. Malaysian blackwood is prized for its glassy tone and sustain.

This wood is more flexible compared to African blackwood, its general coloration is similar to ziricote, black and dark gray lines stand out among subtle shades of brown, reddish and green. All of this is in contrast to the sapwood, which is a light brown color.

The Malaysian Blackwood sides for classical guitar measure 800x110x3,5mm x2.

For acoustic guitars, the sizes are a bit bigger, in this case the Malaysian Blackwood backs measure 550/570x215/230x4,5mm x2
