Ruby dewaxed shellac is a solid natural resin of animal origin, obtained from the secretion of the Kerria lacca insect. It comes in the form of deep dark red flakes, resulting from a purification process that removes natural waxes.
Highly valued in lutherie for its ability to provide a deep, warm, and glossy finish, enhancing the natural beauty of wood. It is used in both the construction of bowed string instruments and the restoration of antique instruments.
Its solubility in alcohol allows for the preparation of stable and easy-to-apply solutions, offering durable protection and resistance to aging.
Note: The term "Ruby" refers to the traditional classification of shellac based on its color, indicating a deep red tone among natural shellac varieties.
