Z-Poxy Epoxy Resin General Description:

Z-poxy epoxy resin is an excellent choice for luthier projects that require a long-lasting, durable finish. It is a two-component resin that is easily mixed and applied with a squeegee. This allows it to fill the pores of the wood and create a uniform, flat surface.

In luthiery, it is commonly used for laminating fingerboards. It can also be used for the application of thin layers on the surface of the guitar, to fix and seal inlays, and to create a transparent and resistant final finish.

Its 20 to 30 minute working time and fast cure time of 3 to 4 hours make it ideal for luthier projects that require a quick drying process. The advantage of Z-poxy is that it is more forgiving than other epoxy resins in terms of mixing ratios. This means that it can be mixed by eye without the need for a digital scale, although we recommend the use of a digital scale for accuracy and reliability.

However, it is important to mention that it's not completely transparent. It will add a slight amber tint to the wood, which some may consider an advantage or disadvantage depending on the desired finish.  Z-poxy has a low odor and is non-toxic, making it safe and easy to use in the luthier's shop.

Some experts recommend using a layer of shellac between the Z-poxy and the topcoat for safety. It is also recommended to test on scrap before using new products.

How to apply Z-Poxy epoxy resin?

To apply Z-Poxy epoxy resin in luthiery, it is important to follow a few key steps:

  • Prepare the surface of the wood. Make sure it is clean, dry and free of dust and dirt.
  • Next, mix the resin and hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions and be sure to mix thoroughly.
  • After mixing, apply it with a scraper following the direction of the wood grain. Try to apply as thinly and evenly as possible, making sure to fill the pores of the wood.
  • Allow the resin to dry completely overnight. Then sand the surface with 400 grit sandpaper until it is flat and even.
  • If necessary, apply a second or third coat of resin to obtain a perfectly flat surface. It is important to wait for each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat.
  • After the last coat dries, you can thin it with alcohol and rub it with a towel to obtain a glassy surface. It is important not to sand the untreated wood, as this may affect the final finish.
  • Finally, you can apply a coat of unwaxed shellac, lacquer or urethane to protect the finish. This will achieve the desired end result.
