The importance of drying in guitar wood quality

Wood is a living material that reacts to its environment. If moisture isn’t carefully removed, it can warp, crack, or develop internal stresses that compromise its usability.

Three essential functions of proper drying

  1. Structural Stability: Dry wood is less prone to warping caused by changes in temperature or humidity. This ensures that an instrument retains its shape and properties over time.
  1. Optimal Resonance: Wood with the right moisture content enhances sound transmission. This is especially important in string instruments, where every vibration is amplified by the wood.
  1. Durability: By reducing moisture content, the risks of fungus and pests are minimized, prolonging the material's lifespan and, by extension, the instrument’s longevity.

Different wood drying techniques

At Maderas Barber, we offer a wide variety of woods dried using two main methods: artificial drying and natural drying. Both are valid and complementary processes that cater to different needs and preferences.

Artificial drying

Artificial drying, which includes techniques like vacuum drying or hot air systems, accelerates the moisture removal process. This method offers meticulous control over temperature and humidity, ensuring consistent and predictable results.

Natural drying

Natural drying, on the other hand, is a slower and more traditional process. It involves allowing the wood to gradually lose its moisture over time, usually under controlled conditions to prevent damage. This method can take years, but the result is wood that has aged naturally and has unique properties.

  • Even aging: The extended time allows the wood fibers to settle naturally, reducing internal stresses.
  • Unique characteristics: Naturally dried woods often exhibit resonance and character that make them ideal for high-end projects.

Within our MB Dry selection, we are launching an exclusive series of Bois de Rose (Dalbergia Maritima) pieces. This collection includes more than 50 sets of sides and backs specially selected for classical and acoustic guitars. Bois de Rose, known for its intense reddish tones, is one of the most prized woods in luthiery. Its average density is 930kg/m³. This wood, native to Madagascar, is renowned for its rarity and its ability to deliver a deep and balanced sound to instruments.
