The box as we know it had its origin in Medieval Europe, with the instrument called Tabor, it already has two patches and a little snare wires assemble under the top patch. They were even mounted with wood or metal sides.

 Later in the sixteenth century appears the side drum, an evolution of the Tabor that was used almost exclusively for military purposes, it already incorporated a system to tension the patches with strings and an adjustable snare wires system.
