An innovative and sustainable wood, offering the same performance as ebony

In instrument making, every piece of wood tells a story. For centuries, ebony, rosewood and maple have been the undisputed stars, chosen for their beauty, density and tone.

But modern lutherie faces a new challenge: maintaining excellence without relying on tropical species that are increasingly scarce. The answer comes from innovation, with a proposal that brings together sustainability, stability and respect for tradition: Brankowood.

What is Brankowood?

Brankowood is an engineered wood developed from carefully selected natural species. Through a process of thermal treatment, stabilization with natural resins and controlled compression, its structure is modified to achieve properties that match—and in many cases surpass—those of the most highly valued exotic woods.

The result is not an imitation, but a genuine wood, enhanced.

Each Brankowood board is manufactured with precision: its density, colour and dimensional stability are all controlled. During production, the moisture content is reduced in a controlled way to around 5%, which guarantees excellent stability even when the climate changes.

Thanks to this process, the material becomes more resistant, less sensitive to humidity and offers a homogeneous surface that is easy to work.

Its controlled density, depending on the grade, opens up different possibilities:

  • A (≈800 kg/m³): light and stable, ideal for necks and sides.

  • A+ (≈1000–1100 kg/m³): denser, comparable to ebony, perfect for fingerboards and bridges.

These densities translate into a firm feel under the fingers, a solid sensation and an acoustic performance comparable to that of traditional high-end tonewoods.

Made to fit the guitars you build the most

Brankowood fingerboards are also designed with dimensions compatible with electric guitars (22–24 frets), acoustic guitars (20 frets), archtops and classical guitars.

The 530 × 70 × 8 mm format offers enough margin to adapt or radius according to the instrument, covering nut widths from 42 to 52 mm and finished lengths of ≈460–520 mm.

A wood that behaves nicely in the workshop

Brankowood glues easily, accepts all kinds of finishes and contains no natural oils, which improves compatibility with modern glues, oils and varnishes. Its deep, uniform black colour reproduces the classic look of ebony, providing an elegant, even appearance.

In addition, its manufacturing process guarantees full traceability and responsible production. As it is free from CITES restrictions, it can be sold and exported without the limitations that affect many tropical species.

For craftsmen, this means peace of mind: a wood that behaves as expected, that can be worked with precision and that keeps its shape and colour over time.

It sands and finishes easily, without chipping or grain irregularities, making it a particularly rewarding material to use in the workshop.

Brankowood is not just an alternative. It is an evolution.

A way to keep building instruments that honour tradition, while keeping an eye on the future of lutherie.
