Seed Lac Crude Shellac 100 g

Seed lac is a solid natural resin of animal origin, obtained from the secretion of the Kerria lacca insect. This form of shellac has been partially purified, removing some impurities present in stick lac, and is presented in small granules ranging from amber to brown in color.

It is especially valued in the preparation of traditional varnishes for bowed string instruments such as violins, violas, and cellos, as well as in the restoration of antique instruments. Its ability to provide a bright, warm, and aging-resistant finish makes it ideal for lutherie applications.

It dissolves easily in alcohol, allowing the preparation of solutions that can be filtered and adjusted according to the specific needs of each varnishing project.

Technical Characteristics

  • Product type: Solid natural resin (insect secretion), partially purified
  • Origin: Southeast Asia (mainly India and Thailand)
  • Producing species: Kerria lacca
  • Color: Amber to brown
  • Water solubility: Insoluble
  • Uses in lutherie: Preparation of traditional varnishes for stringed instruments and restoration of antique instruments
