Indian Flakes Lemon 1 Shellac 100 g

Lemon 1 shellac flakes are a solid natural resin of animal origin, obtained from the secretion of the Kerria lacca insect. They come in the form of dark amber-colored flakes and contain natural wax.

Widely used in the preparation of varnishes for musical instruments, especially in the lutherie of bowed string instruments such as violins and cellos, due to their ability to provide a bright, warm, and aging-resistant finish. Also employed in the restoration of antique instruments and in gilding and cabinetmaking techniques.

Soluble in alcohol, allowing for easy preparation of solutions that enhance the natural beauty of wood.

Note: The term "Lemon 1" refers to the traditional classification of shellac based on its color, indicating a relatively light tone among natural shellac varieties. (The producing insect, Kerria lacca, was formerly known as Coccus lacca.)

Technical Characteristics

  • Product type: Solid natural resin (insect secretion), with wax
  • Origin: India
  • Producing species: Kerria lacca
  • Color: Dark amber
  • Water solubility: Insoluble
  • Uses in lutherie: Traditional varnishes for string instruments and restoration of antique instruments
