Description of the 50mm Nickel Plated P-90 Pickup Base Plate

This nickel-silver baseplate is suitable for building a P-90 pickup with a 50mm string spacing, Gibson style. It serves as the foundation for assembling the rest of the pickup components, such as the Alnico magnets, spacer, coil, etc.

The P-90 pickup was developed by Gibson in 1946 as an evolution of its early single-coil pickups. Its design, attributed to Walter Fuller, featured a wide and flat coil with Alnico magnets placed beneath the adjustable pole pieces, giving it a warmer and more powerful sound than the Fender-style pickups of the time. Originally used in iconic models such as the 1952 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop and the brand’s archtops, the P-90 was eventually displaced in the 1950s by humbucker pickups. However, it remains highly appreciated for its characteristic thick and articulate tone, striking a balance between brightness and warmth that makes it unique.
