Lavender oil is a gentle natural solvent obtained by steam distillation of Lavandula vera DC flowers. Its slow evaporation and excellent compatibility with natural resins make it highly valued in traditional lutherie, both for the construction and restoration of bowed string instruments.

It is commonly used as a solvent for oil varnishes, helping to regulate the mixture’s viscosity without altering drying behavior or adhesion. This ensures smooth brush application, especially over curved or finely carved surfaces like scrolls and purflings. Its retarding effect allows the varnish to be worked slowly and evenly, encouraging thin, well-leveled coats.

In restoration, lavender oil is used to soften and remove aged varnish without affecting the wood or underlying layers. It is also effective for localized cleaning of surface dirt, glue residues, or oxidized resins, preserving the original finish without harsh effects.
