Pax Scraper Burnishing Tool Thomas Flinn

The Pax Burnisher is a simple and essential tool made by Thomas Flinn & Co, the Sheffield company with over a century of producing reference-quality tools for woodworking. Its function is specific and has no substitute: creating the burr on the edge of scrapers so they can cut.

Without a burnisher there is no functional scraper. A scraper without a burr does not scrape — it simply slides across the wood. The process involves drawing the hardened steel rod across the prepared edge of the scraper at a controlled angle, rolling a small amount of metal outward to form the hook or burr that produces the characteristic shavings. Once the technique is learned, the burnisher turns any scraper into a tool capable of leaving the instrument body, binding, fretboard or top perfectly smooth — with no trace of sandpaper. In lutherie for stringed instruments, where the tradition is to work without sanding, the burnisher is as important as the scraper itself.

The rod is round in section, made from hardened steel, and the walnut handle with brass ferrule allows a firm, controlled grip during burnishing. A tool learned in minutes and used for years.
