Iwasaki D200B3 Half-round File for Luthiers
The Iwasaki D200B3 is a Japanese half-round file designed for shaping curved surfaces, interior contours and transitions where a flat file cannot reach easily. Its semicircular profile and chemical-cut Iwasaki teeth make it an extremely versatile tool in the luthier’s workshop.
Its Medium toothing strikes the ideal balance between speed and finish: it removes stock efficiently while leaving a cleaner and more uniform surface than the Coarse version. This makes it perfect for intermediate shaping of necks, heels, volutes, cavities, bridges and curved areas.
The chip-breaking tooth geometry prevents clogging and ensures smooth cutting even in dense hardwoods. The two-hand design gives excellent control in tight spaces and on pronounced curves.
Clean, controlled shaping on curved surfaces
With an overall length of 200 mm (7-7/8") and a semicircular profile, the D200B3 is ideal for refining rounded transitions and interior contours. It performs especially well at the stage where most material has already been removed but fine sanding is still premature.
The D200B3 is a favourite for situations requiring precision with a moderate but efficient cut.
Is it suitable for nut and saddle work?
Yes. The Iwasaki D200B3 is effective for rough-shaping bone nuts and saddles before the final finishing steps.
