Iwasaki D200A2 Flat File for Luthiers
The Iwasaki D200A2 is a Japanese two-hand flat file designed for non-metal materials such as wood, plastic, bamboo and resins. Its special Iwasaki toothing combines the speed of a rasp with the clean finish of a file, leaving a surface that only needs light sanding.
It is an excellent tool in the luthier’s workshop for shaping necks, heels, volutes, bridges and small transitions. The two-hand design allows you to apply controlled pressure on small surfaces while keeping a very precise feeling over the cut.
The tooth geometry breaks the chips and prevents clogging, so the file cuts very smoothly even on dense woods. Although the toothing is classified as Coarse, the resulting finish is surprisingly clean, similar to medium-fine sandpaper, ideal for detailed work on stringed instruments.
Fast and clean stock removal for wood shaping
With its overall length of 200 mm (7-7/8"), the D200A2 is perfect for areas where a full-size file feels cumbersome. The flat, double-sided design lets you work both accessible faces and tight spots, always cutting on the push stroke.
It is especially interesting for luthiers who need quick stock removal without deep scratches, for example when defining a neck profile, smoothing the heel-to-body transition or refining small parts before final sanding.
Is it suitable for nut and saddle work?
Yes. The Iwasaki D200A2 is effective for rough-shaping bone nuts and saddles and bringing them close to their final size quickly and with good control. Final finishing should be done with finer files or sandpaper.
