This Curly Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) set for classical guitar belongs to the MB Exclusive selection by Maderas Barber: pieces individually catalogued for their quality, beauty and uniqueness. Every MB Exclusive product carries the brand seal, certifying its exclusivity.
European Curly Maple is, in our opinion, one of the tonewoods with the greatest potential for classical guitar building. Its qualities caught the attention of the greatest guitar makers in history, such as Hauser and Santos Hernández, who used it in their instruments. Experts highlight its bright tone, fast attack and immediate response to touch — with a more luminous character than mahogany.
Acer pseudoplatanus is a light-coloured wood with golden reflections that deepen as it oxidises. With virtually no open grain, it often eliminates the need for a grain filler. Despite its hardness, it works easily with sharp tools and can achieve a brilliant, attractive finish with a scraper or plane alone, without sandpaper. The curly figure takes on near-three-dimensional depth once lacquered, making it one of the most visually stunning tonewoods in classical lutherie.
Why choose MB Exclusive?
MB Exclusive grew out of decades of accumulated knowledge working with tonewoods for lutherie. The selection of each piece is the result of years learning to read wood: its density, its grain, its feel, and what that means for the instrument being built. Not all pieces of the same species are equal, and knowing how to tell them apart is what makes the difference.
Constant contact with musicians and luthiers is what shapes our catalogue. We know what is needed because we hear it directly. With an MB Exclusive set you can trust that the wood has been chosen with expertise, that the dimensions are right and that what you receive is exactly what you see.
