A contour gauge, also known as a profilometer, is a tool used to capture and replicate the profile or contour of irregular surfaces. This device is especially useful for measuring and copying complex shapes or surfaces with details, being very useful in luthier work and in the fabrication of parts that require precise fit.

The main body of the contour gauge is composed of many metal sheets, placed parallel to each other. These sheets are slideable and conform to the shape of the surface when the gauge is pressed against the object, capturing the exact profile.

It includes a measuring scale on the body, allowing the width or height of the profiled surface to be measured without the need for another measuring instrument.
