Sodium nitrite is a high-purity inorganic compound (NaNO₂) used in lutherie as a pretreatment to simulate or enhance the natural aging of wood. When applied carefully, it reacts with organic components in the wood, causing surface oxidation that alters its tone and visual texture.

This process is mainly used on spruce tops and maple backs to slightly darken the surface, enhance the figure of the grain, and create a warm, aged appearance similar to that of antique instruments. It also helps improve the varnish's penetration and bonding to the wood.
